Next-generation Ford Fiesta

For Fiesta, a major element of the strategy is to lift the most highly-specified models further into the burgeoning market for "premium" B class sector cars.

Sourcing the Fiesta from Europe is not out of the question. Ford says it will roll out Active versions of its model range in the coming years. The expanded line-up is meant to add emotional appeal to the model, push the Fiesta gently upmarket and reinforce the brand's B-segment offerings under a growing threat from premium auto makers entering the category.

Some European reports suggest an electric or petrol-electric hybrid might be planned for the all-new Ford Fiesta at some stage.

Ford has already established Vignale as a luxury-focused sub-brand with similar specifications already available for other cars like the Mondeo and Edge.

Following the lead of rivals from the Volkswagen Group, the Volkswagen Cross Polo and Skoda Fabia Scout, the Ford Fiesta Active will run plastic wheel-arch protectors and meatier tyres for a hint of off-road capability.

More than half of total Fiesta sales are already made up of its now top variant, the Titanium. The ST-Line will also be familiar, bringing the look of the sportier models but without the performance gain. When the engine is running under light loads, the system cuts out a cylinder, turning it into a hyper-efficient two-cylinder on motorways. All other Aussie Fiestas are powered by a 1.5-litre non-turbo four-cylinder. It also mentioned that there will be diesel versions and that five- and six-speed transmissions available.

Ever since the introduction of the Mk4 in 1995, the Fiesta has had a reputation for being great fun to drive.

The cabin gets some much-needed modernisation with classier materials and a 20cm high-definition touch-screen that appears to float above the air vents. The front end has been completely redesigned, as has the rear of the auto. Electronic Torque Vectoring Control aids cornering at speed also.

This has been replaced by an eight-inch touchscreen that features Ford's new Sync 3 infotainment system, which incorporates navigation, DAB radio and improved voice commands that can respond to requests such as: "I need a coffee". Certainly that dash looks a lot better for having fewer buttons on it! They can detect pedestrians as well as vehicles. The Fiesta grows up!
