Ms. May, the leader of her country's Conservative Party who became prime minister in the aftermath of the Brexit vote, also vowed that the US could count on the help fight Islamic terrorism and other threats around the globe.

The prime minister added that a trade agreement between the United Kingdom and U.S. was "in the national interest in both our countries".

"Trade between our two countries is worth £150bn plus".

Mr Trump sought to charm Mrs May, noting during his first news conference as president that, "by the way, my mother was born in Scotland".

"I am honoured to have the prime minister here for our first official visit from a foreign leader", Trump said, standing alongside May in the ornate White House East Room.

"It is our first visit so a great honour".

May, who has taken criticism in Great Britain for her handling of the European Union departure, indicated that she views Trump as a solid ally who will stand with her country on a variety of important matters.

President Donald Trump has said his Secretary of Defense James Mattis will override any decision he makes on torture if he sees fit. And we had a vast amount of press there and I said - this was the day before, you probably remember - "Brexit is going to happen" and I was scorned in the press for making that prediction, I was scorned.

During the press meet, Trump also spoke on controversial topics like the use of torture as he reiterated his support for harsh interrogation techniques but said he will defer to his Pentagon chief, who opposes their use.

Theresa May refused to rule out that the NHS would be part of a trade deal

The new president was effusive about Brexit saying it was a "wonderful thing", a "fantastic thing" and declaring that it'll be a "tremendous asset" for the UK.

The U.K. prime minister becomes the first foreign leader to meet with Trump since his inauguration.

Mrs May said Mr Trump's victory would allow the United States to be "stronger, greater, and more confident in the years ahead", as she stressed the Brexit vote would restore sovereignty and independence to Britain.

Trump also said he expects to get along well with May because they both enjoy being around other people.

And Trump said the meeting renewed Britain and America's "military, cultural, financial and political bond". "Both countries understand that governments must be responsive to everyday working people".

Yesterday, Theresa May refused to rule out if the NHS may be used as part of a trade deal with the US.

That puts May in an awkward spot.

However, stark differences on trade already stand out ahead of the talks.

The British Prime Minister began her two-day visit to the US here in Philadelphia, meeting with congressional Republicans during their joint retreat in Center City. And she spoke out in support of the importance of worldwide institutions like the UN, IMF and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, often the target of Mr Trump's scorn, in maintaining global peace and prosperity.
