Mr Lewis, a former White House official, pointed out that Mr Obama used his last official speech as president to talk about Americans' responsibility to be "guardians of our democracy", even in non-election years.

"President Obama is heartened by the level of engagement taking place in communities around the country", Kevin Lewis, a spokesman for Obama said in a statement.

Although Obama had repeatedly stressed on the need to ensure a smooth transition and not to speak against the new administration and only to do so in rare instances, the former president has had to come out voicing against Trump's new policies and order.

However, the Obama administration's actions were focused on one country and in response to a specific threat of potential flaws in the screening process after evidence came to light that two Iraqis looking for resettlement in the United States had been linked to terrorist activity back home.

The statement comes a day after rumors began to swirl that Trump would sign an executive order overturning the LGBTQ policy. It is one way in which a president carries out the duties of the office, one of which is to supervise federal agencies and provide information about what they are doing, how they are going about it, and how best to manage the resources allocated to them.

Former presidents walk a fine line between staying political engaged and avoiding knocking their successor, CNN said.

Asheville resident Rich Mueller suggested via a lively Facebook discussion that the "rest of the world sees us on a scale of impossibly ignorant to risky to just boastful", and says the ban will not make us safer.

"As your president, I will do everything in my power to protect our LGBTQ citizens from the violence and oppression of a hateful foreign ideology", he said, as he officially accepted the GOP nomination. His executive order banning migrants from seven Muslim majority nations is the talk of the world today. This may be the one hope, should Mr. Trump attempt to make this ban a law: it could be thrown out on the grounds of constitutionality.

President George W. Bush and Barack Obama each issued fewer than 300 orders, Temin said.

Yes. An executive order can be challenged in court, and a judge can decide that a president has overstepped his authority by issuing an overly broad executive order; this happened with President Obama's second-term immigration enforcement changes.
