Violent Protests Force Cancellation Of Breitbart Editor's Speech

The school prides itself on its liberalism and political correctness, but many on campus pointed to the irony of the historical fight for free speech turning into a suppression of unpopular views today.

The event was called off at 6 p.m. and roughly 1,500 people were outside of the venue watching or participating in the protest.

"American universities are on notice".

A major concern of academic researchers is that the president's tweet is meant to silence them. "They simply will not allow any speaker on campus, even someone as silly and harmless and gay as me, to have their voice heard", Mr. Yiannopoulos says.

UC Berkeley said it had prepared security measures following what had happened at Yiannopoulos' previous events.

"Being called a disruptor is a high compliment", Pelosi said in the speech.

"It was unfortunate, frankly outrageous what [some protesters] did in terms of damaging property, and we can't condone that violence", California Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom told KPCC.

Members of the UC staff who Newsom has spoken with are "disgusted by this", he said, describing it as the fourth or fifth action by the president they've had to respond to in just a week.

UC Berkeley, one of the top public universities in the United States, is the home of the 1960s "Free Speech Movement" that helped launch the era's student protests against the Vietnam War.

Patel said he supported peaceful protests, but disagreed with the way things turned out on Wednesday.
