Republican Sens. Susan Collins of ME and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska were the only ones in their party to oppose DeVos, and Democrats would have needed one more defector to block her nomination.

Tillis, who is a Republican, joined with Senator Richard Burr and other Republicans in voting to back Betsy DeVos as the new Secretary of Education.

The Senate historian says it was the first time a vice president had to break a tie on a Cabinet nomination.

The chamber deadlocked at 50-50, with two Republicans breaking ranks to oppose DeVos, a champion of using taxpayer monies to help fund privately run schools. "We share a common goal that all children receive the best education", she said.

As anticipated, the U.S. Senate has narrowly confirmed President Trump's controversial pick for education secretary.

DeVos played a role in promoting charter schools in the state. It was telling that Trump didn't know who his education secretary nominee was on Inauguration Day.

Such were the odds of Leicester's title triumph, it could take another hundred years for them to build an equivalent team. Manchester United have fewer injury concerns, with only Phil Jones not available after he came off against Hull.

DeVos also supports school choice, a method that allows parents to decide if their child gets an education at a public, private, or charter school.

DeVos notoriously noted during her confirmation hearing at least one school might need guns to protect form potential grizzly attacks.

When asked by Senator Bernie Sanders if it was true her family had donated $200 million to the GOP over the years, DeVos said, "That's possible". "Instead, Ms. Devos failed to study, showed up unprepared and appeared unfamiliar with a foundational civil rights law that guarantees every student, including those with disabilities, the right to a quality, equitable education".

Scott noted he had nearly dropped out of high school, "before I found a path with quality public education".

Democrats railed against DeVos' confirmation over concerns about her conflicts of interest related to her financial holdings, her initial lack of transparency, her lack of experience, and her apparent hostility toward public education.
