ICE confirms illegal immigrant arrests in Georgia over the last week

Donald Trump signed two executive orders on January 25 outlining a series of new measures aimed at setting massive restrictions on immigration to the United States and on tearing those already present in the country away from their children, parents, and other loved ones.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers have arrested hundreds of people in a nationwide sweep in what they called a routine "enforcement surge". The Atlanta office, which covers three states, arrested 200 people, Bryan Cox, a spokesman for the office, said.

Foreign nationals are arrested during a targeted enforcement operation conducted by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in Los Angeles, Feb. 7, 2017. He said his office is preparing an announcement detailing any charges and the number of local arrests to be released on Monday.

"These reports create panic and put communities and law enforcement personnel in unnecessary danger", ICE said.

De León later released a full statement, in both English and Spanish, advising his constituents to know their rights and vowing to "aggressively" defend law-abiding immigrants. Immigration lawyers and advocates said some of the enforcement efforts included traffic stops and checkpoints, though Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials disputed those accounts, saying the agency does not use checkpoints while engaging in targeted enforcement operations.

In Los Angeles, California Senate President Pro Tempore Kevin de Leon, a Democrat, told local station ABC7 that 134 people had been detained during an ICE sweep on Thursday, adding that he had asked the agency to disclose further details.

Other civil liberties groups took a less strident tack, expressing concerns about the lack of information surrounding the arrests while also noting that they had criticized the Obama administration, which deported large numbers of people, usually focusing on those with criminal histories.

Hassan said he's anxious the Trump administration is broadening its definition of who is a priority for deportation in order to produce numbers of deportees as promised on the campaign trail and shortly after the election. An ICE spokeswoman did not answer questions about whether the president's executive order led to what Guadalupe Garcia de Rayos' deportation.

A report released Thursday showed almost one in five immigrants in the us illegally live in either the Los Angeles or New York City metropolitan areas.

"ICE claims that these things it's doing are routine, and they are part of their regular work, but our community is telling us otherwise", she says. Marin declined to discuss any connection between the raids and the president's recent executive order, except to say that the operations had been planned for weeks before that order was issued.

A video that circulated on social media Friday appeared to show ICE agents detaining people in an Austin shopping center parking lot.

"Angelenos should not have to fear raids that are disruptive to their peace of mind and bring unnecessary anxiety to our homes, schools, and workplaces", Garcetti said. I am asking ICE to clarify whether these individuals are in fact unsafe, violent threats to our communities, and not people who are here peacefully raising families and contributing to our state.
