Benjamin Watson: Protesting Against Education Sec. DeVos 'Hurts the Students'

The Board of Trustees of the San Diego Unified School District were expected to pass a resolution on Tuesday, Feb. 14, to extend an invitation to President Donald Trump's Secretary of Education, Betsy DeVos, to visit the city's schools. But in Detroit, where DeVos has said charters have shown positive results, data cited by the Free Press in the past has shown that neither charters nor public schools have posted particularly strong results. This was after DeVos claimed "confusion" to Senator Tim Kaine about the federal Individuals With Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Historically, private schools do not fare well in economically depressed areas, and the quality of education, curriculum, and instruction will suffer under DeVos if a policy of market-driven schools is pursued.

Douglass, an African-American social reformer and statesman, died February 20, 1895. "It is abundantly clear that she is grossly under qualified for this position", said Scarlette Schultz, a sophomore English and Secondary Education major. This leads to the question of how much will change for America's 50 million public school students and 20 million public college students. The Senator expressed significant concern with Ms. DeVos' unfamiliarity.

"Some charter schools are successful and some are not", she said.

The moment from the hearings which arguably drew the most public attention, however, was when Ms. DeVos suggested that the presence of guns in schools may be necessary in some cases "to protect from potential grizzlies".

While many students are at ends about DeVos's perspectives, some are choosing to maintain neutrality over all of the controversy.

He added, "Obviously North Korea is a big, big problem and we will deal with that very strongly", without offering specifics. The White House has been mulling whether to appeal the decision blocking Trump's order or to rewrite it and issue a new ban.

Many kids are able to graduate, but find out that with a poor education, they are not equipped to succeed and build their American dream. So, with an open mind, let's head on over to the official U.S. Department of Education Twitter feed.

Whiston would like to see a further expansion of this kind of freedom, and hopes that DeVos "returns the power to the states, and really gives us the control to decide what should happen to students in our own state and not have the federal government dictate to us", he said. In an op-ed for The Hill, Jerusha Conner, a Villanova professor specializing in education, argued that voucher programs actually "exacerbate educational inequality". "I had a great experience in a public school setting". Her charity, The American Federation of Children, favors both waivers and scholarships which allow companies to offset tax liability by funding students to attend private schools.

"Maybe I am old fashioned, but democracy depends on a high-quality education system", he said.

DeVos' would likely receive a warmer reception in New Mexico, where Public Education Secretary Hanna Skandera said she would be welcome to any school in the southwestern state.
