North Korea conducted ballistic missile testing in defiance of the UN Security Council, which had imposed tough sanctions against Pyongyang.

South Korea said: The repeated provocations by the DPRK pose a direct challenge to the united resolve of the worldwide community manifested in the unanimously-adopted UN Security Council resolution 2321.

According to analysts, the achievement is a risky step forward in North Korea's pursuit of a deliverable nuclear weapon, and it's a first test for President Trump.

As expected, the two leaders used their own languages to condemn North Korea's missile launch.

Here's a look at Sunday's launch and what it means for security on an already tense Korean Peninsula. But he added the latest test, which appeared to be the second outing for a missile that could be fired from a submarine, was a "fairly significant step up the ladder" and could threaten US bases in Asia.

The missile launched in the latest test, however, did not appear to be an ICBM. "That's why we think their latest launch (with solid fuel) is a serious development".

The ballistic missile that North Korea launched over the weekend plunged into the sea some 300 miles away.

He said the firing range of these types of missiles can be expanded by adjusting the angle at which it is pointed, so that it either travels vertically or horizontally, or by increasing fuel efficiency. He added: "South Korea is probably more susceptible to North Korea's virulence than any other country".

In an editorial Monday, the official English-language China Daily newspaper said the missile test provided "a good excuse" for the United States and their military allies to step up their military cooperation.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un should immediately stop his reckless provocation that only contributes to crises in the world.

The guided missile destroyers, USS Stethem and USS McCampbell, are equipped with the Aegis ballistic missile defense system, which is able to track 100 missiles simultaneously and fire interceptors to take out an enemy's ballistic projectiles. Although relations remain tense, South Korea and Japan in November agreed to share sensitive information bilaterally as well. It's not clear when that might happen.

It has said it is on the verge of testing an intercontinental ballistic missile, which could eventually threaten the continental USA, about 9,000km away. That was followed by the latest sanctions resolution November 30 targeting North Korea's hard currency revenues by placing a cap on coal exports, cutting them by at least 62 percent or by an estimated $800 million.

Trump did not speak of any planned response but Washington's United Nations ambassador Nikki Haley said in a statement: "It is time to hold North Korea accountable - not with our words, but with our actions".
