But the debate showed the party hasn't settled questions over just how vigorously to oppose Trump, or how to settle division within its own ranks.

USA intelligence officials have blamed Russian agents and said Moscow's intention was to help Trump win. And, as was clear from the speeches in Atlanta on Saturday, they realized they must unite against a common foe: President Trump.

"I am confident that when we lead with our values and lead with our actions we succeed".

But another candidate cautioned against focusing too much energy on Trump. Bernie Sanders backed Ellison and former chair Howard Dean backed South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg.

"Yes, we've got to take the fight to him".

"We're excited", he said after Perez was chosen Saturday.

The candidates also broke over future primary contests. Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer, Sen.

"The challenges we face as a party and a country are real", she said in a video message.

Perez, who is a descendent of Dominican immigrants, specifically took aim at Trump's decision to ban arrivals from seven predominantly Muslim nations, which has been since overridden by the U.S. judges.

Sunday and holiday penalty rates to be cut
Australian Council of Trade Union president Ged Kearney said workers on minimum wages relied on weekend penalty rates to survive. However, Australian Retailers Association executive director Russell Zimmerman said the decision would grow the sector.

"The headwinds to roll back our nation's progress today are strong but together, we can and must ensure all Americans know: we have their back!"

The son of Dominican immigrants, Perez is the first Latino to ever chair the DNC.

"Out of those who responded, Ellison leads with 105 supporters to Perez's 57". He is vying with seven others to chair the Democratic National Committee. Like, they're not the person running for president.

"What unites our party is a belief in opportunity - the idea that however you started out, whatever you look like, or whomever you love, America is the place where you can make it if you try", he said. Both said the party must capitalize on widespread opposition to Trump but also work to reach frustrated working-class voters who felt abandoned Democrats and embraced Trump. Reaction wasn't enthusiastic among the liberal groups that embraced Sanders' presidential campaign and have intensified their efforts since the election of Republican President Donald Trump.

"We've got earnest, honest work to do under Chairman Perez", he said, "and all of us and all of you are going to help him".

Perez said he and Harrison have grown close during the race and before.

The vote for the new DNC chair is scheduled for Saturday. They did something very similar when they had Michael Steele wind up winning, when the Republican Party didn't want to go and be aligned with Katon Dawson who was then the South Carolina Party chairman and appeared to be siding with a white Southern Republican when you had the first black president.

In defeat, Ellison, who was an early supporter of Bernie Sanders' presidential run and has always been a liberal darling, asked the party to unify.
