What Keith Ellison's Defeat Says About the DNC

He defended Minister Louis Farrakhan of the Nation of Islam against (easily proven) charges of anti-Semitism.

Congressman Tim Ryan said though the race was close, he's convinced Perez will make a great chairman for the entire party.

Tom Perez, former labour secretary under President Obama will lead the Democratic National Committee (DNC) as Chair in its fundraising and organising activities, as the party starts to rebuild after a calamitous defeat in 2016. Perez narrowly won 235 votes to Ellison's 200 and immediately named Ellison Deputy Chair in an act of reconciliation and party unity. But despite that unfortunate appointment, I will remain in the Democratic Party and work from within to move it back to its vibrant liberal center and away from its radical fringe. Bernie Sanders's strong support for Mr. Ellison. Sen. Republicans have 25 trifectas, which are state governments controlled by one political party, and Democrats have eight, according to Ballotpedia.

My advice is to not be satisfied if you wanted Ellison to take the DNC reigns.

But despite the breathless eulogies by the media and some Republicans that a Trump presidency defines the GOP as "a party of Reagan that no longer exists", one couldn't help but notice the subdued cheers for Trump from the CPAC audience compared to the boisterous support for Vice President Mike Pence the day before.

Trump weighed in on the DNC chair election outcome, tweeting that the election was "totally rigged" in Perez's favor and compared it to the 2016 Democratic presidential primary between Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders. "We don't have the luxury to walk out of this room divided".

"Hillary Clinton lost because of the decisions that were made within the DNC and if we had had vibrant local committees in Wisconsin, in Pennsylvania, and in MI, potentially in OH and some of the other states, she would president of the United States right now, no matter of anything else that was going on", Buckley added.

Nevertheless, her letter to Dwight was poignant, particularly in retrospect as Dwight's actions played out through the episode. If he really is Team Negan now, he does bring with him a whole lot of inside information-not to mention jerry-rigging skills.

He also rejected the allegation that Ellison was defeated by a "smear campaign". That, and the emphatic speeches calling for unity by both men, especially by Ellison, were more examples of how the wounds opened during the primaries have yet to heal.

Buckley could not be reached for comment for this report, but if Ellison had won the chairmanship, the New Hampshire party chairman would have been in line for a major role in the national party leadership, leading the party's effort to strengthen state party organizations. Striking out toward the dead end, Democrats will need more than a wing and a prayer to survive and prosper. "But the idea that Tom was elected chairman because of these attacks is fiction".

It's something that seems to animate both bases - and Ellison's religion was something that was greeted very differently at both events.

Buckley retained his position as state party chairman, and is likely to win the support of state committee members for another term when they meet in March. "That is the question people asked - not is he an anti-Semite and anti-Israel".

"It's been a rough road getting the Democratic National Committee to focus on state parties", he said.

I hate to say it, but he sort of has a point-though he'd be more convincing if he'd ever taken a tough stance on progressive issues. Perez worked for Ted Kennedy, litigated civil rights at the Department of Justice and defended worker rights as labor secretary.

Together they are going to oppose the politics of the current President of the United States, Donald Trump.
