Virginia Commonwealth Rams head coach Will Wade during the Rams' first round of the NCAA tournament against Saint Mary's. "We just came back to connect them".

His hiring comes less than 24 hours after Wade acceepted the LSU position. Chattanooga won more than 20 games in Year 2 under Wade, who then took over at VCU when Smart left for Texas. A member of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, Rhoades led the program to four trips to the Division III equivalent of the NCAA Tournament. On the VCU practice gym wall is a slogan that one writer said perfectly describes his coaching philosophy: "Chance Favors The Aggressor".

Wade says he's going to do everything it takes to make the LSU basketball team the best it can be.

Rice was eliminated by Utah Valley in the College Basketball Invitational Monday night, finishing the season at 23-12.

But VCU also is facing a rebuilding year.

The Rams have reached the NCAA tournament for seven straight seasons.

In February, Rhoades explained the most important takeaway from his first stint at VCU to Craig Broadman of the Rice Thresher.

A plane, officiating, and upsets headline 1st weekend of NCAA Tournament
This was the first time a Duke team coached by Krzyzewski failed to get out of the first weekend after winning the ACC tournament. Also with three teams are the Big 12 ( Kansas , Baylor and West Virginia) and the Pac-12 ( Arizona , Oregon and UCLA).

Successful recruiting will be necessary to keep that streak alive.

"It's about building relationships and making them feel good", Rhoades said. He's now gotten to a place back at VCU where he can shine and everyone will notice. Jeff Goodman of ESPN confirmed the Rams' expected hire.

"We are going to be aggressive, we are going to be committed, and we are going to be thankful every day", Wade said.

Defensively, it's likely to look a lot like what the Rams used to refer to as "havoc", a full-court pressing style largely abandoned under Wade.

Wade put his enthusiasm for the new job on full display during a midday introductory press conference on the second floor of the student union attended by roughly 100 students and fans.

"We're gonna play fast, we're gonna be exciting, we're gonna go after people and we're going to win", Rhoades concluded, to thunderous applause. "I think that's really important".
