Trump says US is ready to act alone on North Korea

Trump and Xi are also expected to discuss China's militarization of the South China Sea.

The April 28 meeting on non-proliferation and North Korea will be "timely" following a US-China summit this week, US Ambassador Nikki Haley told reporters Monday.

"And China has great influence over North Korea".

"Ensuring President Xi does not lose face is a top priority for China", a Chinese official said. The current U.S. government is hopeful that it would be able to fix a good deal with China that would benefit both countries.

"China will continue to work with the United States to think creatively and keeping pushing for greater balance in China-U.S. trade", Zheng said.

President Trump has claimed that if China do not step up and apply pressure to North Korea then the U.S. might possibly turn to military action.

If Trump thinks he can play the heavy hand in his negotiations with the Chinese leader and get him to yield, says Stone Fish, the U.S. president will be in for a surprise. "You know, I am not the United States of the past where we tell you where we are going to hit in the Middle East", he stated. If China shuts the spigot, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un will have to fundamentally revise his nuclear strategy.

Hwang, in addition, stressed the need to maintain close cooperation with the worldwide community, particularly its security ally the United States, to ramp up pressure on Pyongyang to have it change tack towards denuclearization. In the past, Trump has talked about altering trade policies with China and naming the country as a currency manipulator.

Imports dropped 1.8 per cent to US$236.4 billion as the flow of Chinese goods tumbled by US$8.6 billion, led by a big drop in cell phone imports.

Nuwan Kulasekara then claimed impressive figures of 4-37 to help bowl Bangladesh out for 210 inside 44.3 overs of their run-chase. Mashrafe disclosed the matter while addressing a press conference after the third ODI match at the Sinhalese Sinhalese Club Club.

"The United States has seen China for 25-plus years say they are concerned about North Korea, but we haven't seen them act like they are concerned about North Korea", Haley said.

North Korea has stepped up ballistic missile tests and has staged five nuclear tests so far, including two a year ago.

While it remains unclear what kind of sanctions are in the offing, U.S. officials have indicated they might pressure Chinese companies and businessmen to cut ties with North Korea. "They need to show us how concerned they are".

This will be Trump's most closely watched summit with a foreign leader and will be, as he himself conceded in a tweet last week, likely a "very hard one" on account of differences between USA and China on many issues, chiefly trade.

Former Defense Secretary Ash Carter, however, said he doubted that Beijing will cooperate.

Whatever Trump has in mind, any change in the status quo that comes about without China's participation, or Russia's, is likely to antagonize North Korea's two nuclear-armed neighbors.

Currently, the China is the US's biggest trading partner in goods, with almost $600 billion in total traded between the two world's largest economies in 2016.

But that's from a bygone era when North Korean and Chinese officials would happily pose together during banquets but then they'd each go their separate ways, says Stone Fish. This is indispensable journalism, brought to you by the largest, most experienced newsroom in the region.
