The CUNY Graduate School of Journalism will administer the initiative.

Campbell Brown, the recently appointed head of news partnerships for Facebook, said in a statement the News Integrity initiative is meant to "give people the tools necessary to be discerning about the information they see online".

"We're in good company with over 25 funders and participants, including the Craig Newmark Philanthropic Fund, the Ford Foundation, the Democracy Fund, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the Tow Foundation, AppNexus, Mozilla and Betaworks", according to Facebook's statement.

Following Facebook's move to alert users of fake news, the social network is now joining forces with other tech giants to fight fake news once and for all. Money will be allocated to applied research and projects, along with facilitating meetings with industry experts.

They will also host projects and research initiatives across the globe to focus on advancing news literacy.

"In high school US history, I learned that a trustworthy press is the immune system of democracy", said Craig Newmark, founder of Craigslist and the Craig Newmark Philanthropic Fund. During the 2016 elections, Facebook was criticized for failing to halt the spread of fake news.

There were reports that he was caught creeping in the DMs with multiple women, including a transgender model, Mia Isabella. But before you get to excited, remember that this isn't the first time these two seemed well and truly dunz-o.

The initiative comes after Facebook in January launched its "Journalism Project", aimed at establishing stronger ties with the media.

"I think we in journalism can do a lot to teach the platforms about journalism and public responsibility", Jarvis said. Although viewed as a technology company, embedding world-class tools, the company has come under fire for not doing more to limit fake news and hate speech, which has been able to become distributed media throughout the site.

So good luck to the News Integrity Initiative.

The task ahead for News Integrity Initiative is challenging owing to the rise of hyper partisanship in the news media environment, the growth of filter bubbles and other factors which have made the public's trust in the media fall to a new low.

The reputation of journalism has been tainted by recent events.

The venture will help news publishers reach new subscribers, including a partnership with German publisher Bild, as well as the Washington Post, Fox News, El PaĆs and the Hindustan Times, among others, to develop ways to show more news to their readers.
