The two would often team up for a "Guess Mom's Pies" segment on the show, in which Letterman would try to guess the types of pies his mother had baked in her kitchen in Carmel, Indiana, NBC News reported.

Dorothy Mengering died at her IN home Tuesday.

During her son's tenure as host of CBS's Late Show, Mengering made frequent appearances.

She was well known for her Thanksgiving Day pie guessing contests. In 1996, Mengering published a cookbook with writer Jess Cagle, "Home Cookin' With Dave's Mom".

As Letterman, who turned 70 on Wednesday, prepared to retire from his longtime role as host in 2015, he aired a special Mother's Day montage honoring Mengering.

Kendrick Lamar's 4th Album Has A New "Expected Release" Date
Elsewhere, Greg Kurstin, who has worked on numerous pop hits, including Adele's "Hello", contributed to the album's 10th track. Kendrick's upcoming album features contributions from U2, BADBADNOTGOOD, Mike WiLL Made It , Alchemist.

She and husband Hans belonged to the Kiwanis Club, for which sales of her cookbook, Home Cookin' With Dave's Mom, helped raise a significant amount of money for the Kiwanis' global effort to end iodine deficiency in children of third world countries. "Dave's Mom" became a household name when David brought Dorothy on "Late Night" for an iconic kitchen segment and as a correspondent for Dave during 3 Winter Olympics.

Mengering leaves behind three children, David, Gretchen and Janice. She married Letterman's father, Harry Letterman, in 1942. Hans Mengering died in March, 2013.

The Daily News and The Hollywood Reporter reported that Letterman's representative confirmed the news. Her Midwest charm contrasted with her son's biting sarcasm as he tried to guess what type of pie she had made. "I think I'm thought of as everybody's mother or grandma".

Letterman's iconic "Top 10" lists were another recurring bit for Mengering.

We echo this sentiment and send our best wishes to Letterman, his family, friends and loved ones during this hard time.
