Denim Day for Sexual Assault Awareness Month

April is both National Sexual Assault Awareness Month and Child Abuse Prevention Month.

"We need every person in our community to join our efforts in ending sexual violence", said Mayor Barrett. Although the colors are vibrant and cheerful, the bold text conveys a serious message: Denim Day seeks to bring conversation to sexual assault, in which participants wear denim to showcase their support for assault victims.

For the past 17 years, the Honor Denim Day campaign has been held in support of Sexual Violence Awareness Month. In 1992, an 18-year-old girl pressed charges against her 45 year old driving instructor.

Going to Turkish courts or the ECHR "doesn't mean these applications will yield a result", spokesman Osman Baydemir said.

Denim Day was born out of a ruling by the Italian Supreme Court where a rape conviction was overturned after the justices reasoned that because the victim was wearing tight jeans, she must have helped her rapist remove her jeans, implying consent. "That is what spread across to our country and now we also acknowledge Denim Day", said Caring House Executive Director, Cheryl O'Neil. Since then, wearing jeans on Denim Day has become a symbol of protest against erroneous and destructive attitudes about sexual assault.

Buttons will be passed out at the Denim Day table that say "ask me why I'm wearing denim" to raise awareness.
