'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2' blasts off with $145M debut

Then there's the unique fun the "Guardians" franchise has over its equally successful counterparts in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Starring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, and Bradley Cooper among many others, Guardians 2 is an escape thriller that also earned more than $100 million in global ticket sales from an earlier opener, too. A development such as that makes it seem as if the character is set to return for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (which James Gunn has already started writing and will be returning to direct), but now there is a confirmation. According to reports, a 2020 release date is aligned with the upcoming "Avengers 4", which confirms that "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" will be the catalyst to the new storyline of the MCU. The film takes its place in history at #17 in the all-time list of USA release weekends, narrowly trailing Furious 7, which went on to gross $1.5 billion worldwide. Every single one has gone to number one at the domestic box office its opening weekend.

Gunn said that the "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" sequel ends their story.

The eighth film in the franchise has now raced off with a little more than $207 million at the domestic box office and a stunning $1.2 billion globally.

In other "Guardians" news, actress Zoe Saldana (who stars in the films as Gamora) was said to have a more significant role in "Vol. 3".

"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2", $124 million. After taking in $56 million on Friday, the film also took in $51 million on Saturday.

Third place went to The Boss Baby, an animated tale of rivalry between infants and puppies featuring Alec Baldwin, which took US$6 million. In an interview with USA Today, director James Gunn reveals that there's actually a sixth after-credits scene for the movie that was cut from the theatrical release.
