"I am looking forward to so much".

Manning's clemency application to Obama maintained his belief that he was unfairly sentenced to such a long period in prison, saying, "I have never made any excuses for what I did".

"I'm figuring things out right now - which is exciting, awkward, fun, and all new for me", Manning said in an email seen by The Associated Press.

Bradley Manning, was sentenced 35 years in prison in 2013 for leaking classified information to WikiLeaks.

Manning's lawyers have said Manning was subjected to violence in prison and argued the military mistreated her by requiring her to serve her sentence in an all-male prison, restricting her physical and mental health care and not allowing her to keep a feminine haircut.

In a recent interview with NPR, Steven Nelson, a reporter with U.S. News and World Report, clarified why Obama chose to significantly shorten the original 35-year sentence handed to Manning.

"It was by far the longest sentence given to any whistleblower in US history", Pulse said, saying the film would depict "the journey of her fight for survival and dignity, and her transition from prisoner to a free woman". Had President Obama not done so, Manning's year of release would have remained 2045.

In January she tweeted that she wanted to move to Maryland after being released, a state where she previously lived.

Christian evangelist Franklin Graham expressed his outrage on May 16 that Chelsea Manning was going to be released from a US military prison on May 17.

She hopes to reside in the Washington area, the attorney said, explaining her supporters there will be vital, not only to her transition to civilian life but also to her transition to living openly as a transgender woman.

Ahead of Manning's release, a group of musicians released a compilation album with all proceeds to go to the former soldier as she starts a new life.

Obama's decision to commute Manning's sentence set off harsh criticism from some Republicans and intelligence officials.

Manning had been imprisoned since 2010, when, then an Army private, she was arrested for sharing classified documents with WikiLeaks. That includes time spent in prison during her trial and after she received her sentence.

The New York Times reported earlier this year that Manning was eventually permitted to wear female prison undergarments, receive speech therapy to feminize her tone and begin cross-sex hormone therapy.
