Despite the contentious debates embroiling the Dallas Police Department and the city, Wednesday afternoon's police memorial ceremony downtown wasn't about politics, pensions or retention.

Bevan said that 140 officers lost their lives past year, a 6 percent increase since 2015.

The memorial features two curving, 304-foot-long blue-gray marble walls, guarded by four lion statues.

During the ceremony, police read the names of officers killed in the line of duty and Mayor Mike Rawlings read a proclamation to mark National Police Week. But other departments in the area - including the Mohave County Sheriff's Office in Arizona, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department in Nevada and the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department in California as well as federal agencies such as the FBI and the National Parks Service - haven't been as fortunate.

"(Basler) and another officer were responding to a prowler call on West Levee Street and they encountered the suspect, which in turn opened fire on our captain", Dale said. "We grieve with you, and we share your pain", Pughes said.

Law enforcement statewide also took part in the memorial.

"It is a chance for us to honor those officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice and gave their lives in performance of their duty", said Welsh.

Members of the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department Mounted Unit particpate in the Law Enforcement Memorial hosted annually by the Santa Maria Police Department. Tragically, some lose their lives in the line of duty, and this memorial will honour their courage, dedication and sacrifice.

Faison said the families of fallen officers are just as fearless as the officers themselves.

Even with the daily risks and the wavering public support they sometimes feel, they still put on the uniform and head to work each day.

Denise Hunter handed Thompson's parents a bracelet she wore during a 250-mile bike ride from Virginia to Washington D.C.in honor of the fallen.

He said that the series of ceremonies held this week have been healing for him and his nine-officer department, as they slowly recover from Allery's death.

"The NMA is the place where the nation can go to remember our services and the men and women who have been killed in the course of their duty for their country".

"We wanted to let the police officers who work out of these headquarters know that they're appreciated and very supported by this community", said Police Lieutenant Charles Warner.

"It's a way of saying to the families who are around, we appreciate your loved one", Faison said. They were honored in an intimate, informal ceremony at the Bradenton Police Department after the memorial.
