The sheriff used almost identical language from sources without properly attributing passages 47 times in his thesis on security, CNN's investigative KFile reported Saturday.

Other sources Clarke lifted words from include: the 9/11 Commission Report, a 2011 article in the Homeland Security Affairs journal, the Pew Research Center, a 2012 report by the Constitution Project, a 2003 report by the US General Accounting Office, a 2011 Brennan Center report, a 2013 Washington Post article about the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, Comparative Homeland Security: Global Lessons, a textbook by Nadav Morag, and Safe Cities Project, a research paper published by the Manhattan Institute.

Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke, the firebrand Fox News commentator reportedly tapped for a senior post at the Department of Homeland Security, may have plagiarized nearly 50 sections of his master's thesis, a new analysis shows.

On Saturday night, Clarke denied the plagiarism charges, telling the Journal Sentinel, "only someone with a political agenda would say this is plagiarism".

A strong conservative who runs for office as a Democrat, Clarke rose to prominence past year with vocal support for the Trump presidential campaign.

This on top of criticism of his management of a Milwaukee County Jail where, according to prosecutors, an inmate died of dehydration after being deprived of water for a week. And in March, the Associated Press reported that four people - including a newborn baby - died at the jail within a six-month period a year ago.
