North Korea fire new ballistic missile in test

Moon's admission comes against the backdrop of earlier South Korean statements that North Korea appears to be making greater progress with ballistic missiles than expected.

South Korean President Moon Jae-In warned Wednesday there was a "high possibility" of military clashes along the border with North Korea as tensions mount over Pyongyang's weapons ambitions.

China urged the United States and North Korea to commit to a political decision to solve the "nuclear problem".

A U.S. State Department spokesman said the United States remains open to talks with North Korea but the country would have to "cease all its illegal activities and aggressive behavior in the region".

The test was meant to examine the "technical details and characteristics" of a new type of rocket "capable of carrying a powerful and big nuclear warhead", KCNA news agency said.

Uruguayan Ambassador Elbio Rosselli, the current council president, said after the meeting that members are united in condemning the latest missile launch as "a serious threat to worldwide peace".

Two U.S. defense officials confirmed that a reentry vehicle of a new ballistic missile North Korea launched last Sunday successfully reentered the Earth's atmosphere, NBC News reported on Friday.

Trump has long touted his plan to pressure China to do more to rein in North Korea.

Japan has strongly protested to North Korea about the ballistic missile launch it conducted on Sunday as Tokyo can not tolerate its repeated acts of provocation, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga told a news conference.

Yesterday, the USA said it could persuade China to impose new United Nations sanctions on North Korea. "The Unification Ministry has considered options on this internally but nothing has been decided yet", Mr Lee said.

North Korea has carried out two atomic tests and dozens of missile launches since the beginning of previous year in its quest to develop a missile capable of delivering a nuclear warhead to the continental United States.

Moon's envoy to Washington, South Korean media mogul Hong Seok-hyun, said Trump spoke of being willing to use engagement to ensure peace, Hong said in comments carried by television.
