Child's Body Found After Missing Since 2013

CENTREVILLE, Ill. (AP) - Police believe the remains of a child found in the garage of a vacant IL home had been there four years.

Any potential homicide investigation would be handled by St. Clair County law enforcement.

Police found the remains after a woman in Las Vegas contacted police Monday night and told officers her husband had killed their then-6-year-old daughter in IL years earlier and hid the body in the garage of a home in Centreville, near St. Louis.

Authorities say human remains have been found after a Las Vegas woman told investigators her dead child had been in a vacant southern IL home for two years. Dye says police found human remains wrapped in two blankets. Belleville police said a team of investigators is headed to Nevada.

The couples neighbor says one thing she can't figure out is how that little girl's body ended up so far from this Belleville home. 34-year-old Jason Quate faces sex trafficking charges after his wife reported he forced her into prostitution. Eventually, Quate said, his wife came up with the idea to work as a prostitute in Las Vegas. Quate has not been charged in his daughter's death, though a homicide investigation continues in IL.

Quate declined an interview request on Thursday from The Associated Press.

"He was placed under arrest for the sex trafficking and for living off the earnings of a prostitute, currently", Spencer says. She said officers met to discuss the "extremely disturbing" child death case Tuesday, but would not give details.

It was a call from a domestic violence shelter in Las Vegas that began the investigation Tuesday.

Jail records showed that the mother was also jailed in Las Vegas pending a Monday court appearance as a fugitive on an out-of-state warrant. The girls had not been allowed to leave the house or enroll in school for the last 18 months to two years. Raymond Spencer said in a video statement.

The neighbor says to her it was Quate's wife that made her worry. It's unclear whether the woman was being questioned by police or had been taken into custody.
