Taking to Twitter to express his warm condolences, Affleck tweeted that West "exemplified heroism".

Fans recall the relationship between Batman and his sidekick Robin, played by Burt Ward. "He was and always will be our hero", his family said. Adam West gave us a Batman who was dedicated to justice without it having to cost him his soul. He often was hired to play a comically fictionalised version of himself in live-action and animated roles and became a successful voice actor.

However, West's portrayal of Batman also took its toll on the actor's career. His last post on the official Adam West Facebook page was uploaded on April 28 and shows the actor alongside Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, commonly known as Woz, at the San Jose Comic Con.

And he also played Simon Trent, the Grey Ghost, in Batman: The Animated Series.

Born William West Anderson in Walla Walla, Wash., the chisel-jawed West moved to Hollywood in 1959 and got his feet wet with Western TV series like "Bonanza" and "Overland Trail".

It's understood that West died peacefully surrounded by his family and is survived by his wife Marcelle, six children, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. They'd hoped to play off of the success of the Richard Burton's similarly titled film from eight years prior, but the script was frightful and the cast could not save the show.
