All sunshine and smiles at 2017 Juneteenth parade and festival

Though slavery has been out of practice for over 150 years, Juneteenth is still a day that is celebrated among many who want to make sure the relevance of the day isn't forgotten. Some people think that when the Emancipation Proclamation was signed that everyone was free, which was not what happened. However, the word of freedom did not reach the Confederate state of Texas until 1965, two years later.

Organizers say more than 200 people attended a prayer breakfast Monday in Galveston at the Ashton Villa, site of the city's Juneteenth monument.

What exactly is Juneteenth and why do we celebrate it?

It is also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day.

The festival that followed included live music, fun activities for kids such as a giant slide, delicious local soul food and a number of community resource booths, is held annually.

State Senator Bill Dodd was also there to speak, and said that Juneteenth is special because it's important to remember our roots and to celebrate what's right in the United States, going forward. And celebrations today continue as we reflect on opportunities afforded to generation after generation because of the events of that day.
