On its official Twitter account, Israel Defense Forces, or IDF, said several projectiles fired from Syria landed in northern Golan Heights.

Tel Aviv described the projectile fire as "errant", blaming it on internal fighting.

"In response to over 10 projectiles launched from Syria, IAF aircraft targeted origin of launches & 2 Syrian tanks", the IDF stated.

Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu earlier this week denied Israel provides support to Syrian rebels after the Wall Street Journal reported a special Israeli unit was providing aid to rebels.

He also said Israel views "with utmost gravity" Iranian attempts to gain a foothold in Syria or to provide advanced weapons to Hezbollah, its Lebanese proxy. There were no casualties or damage reported from the mortars although the Israeli government warned both hikers and farmers to stay away from the border.

The IDF video contradicts a Syrian military claim carried by Syrian state-run media that the Israeli strikes had targeted "services facilities and residential buildings in the surroundings of al-Baath city in Quenitra".

In April, Israel shot down what it called "a target" over the Golan Heights. It also reported fighting in Quneitra between the Syrian army and rebels.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a British-based monitoring group, said two Syrian soldiers were killed in the attack.

Israel seized 1,200 square kilometres (460 square miles) of the Golan Heights from Syria in the Six-Day War of 1967 and later annexed it in a move never recognised by the worldwide community.

In an exclusive interview with Press TV, director of the Institute for Historical Review, Mark Weber, said that by carrying such periodical attacks against Syrian positions in the Golan Heights, Tel Aviv is setting the stage for a massive military attack against Syrian territories.

Stray fire from fighting between the forces of Syria's legitimate government and rebel factions are not uncommon in the contested Golan Heights.
