A derailment and power outage at the 125th Street subway station in Manhattan has suspended service on multiple subway lines as riders describe terror and chaos, including smoke-filled cars and loud bangs.

Passengers told CBS New York they felt the train jump around 125th Street.

New York City Subway is investigating an incident in which a train derailed in Upper Manhattan on Tuesday. "We need to determine what it is". It was not immediately clear how many straphangers were on the derailed A train, and how many were on three other trains evacuated as a result of the derailment. It said there was smoke, but no fire.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority says an investigation is under way after an A train derailed near the 125th Street station this morning. Emergency crews shut off track power after derailments to prevent evacuees from being electrocuted.

Williams said one woman walked out of the station with soot all over her hands.

The witness said she told the driver of the boat not to park in the area because there were children swimming the area. The operator of the houseboat, Jason Stuart Bernal , 44, of Killeen, was charged with criminally negligent homicide.

The South Ferry station opened at noon Tuesday, almost five years after it was flooded by Superstorm Sandy in October 2012. MTA employees and contractors in hard hats cheered as the first train rolled into the pristine new station.

Riders had to use the old station once again during the lengthy repairs to the new one.

The MTA last month announced a new initiative complementary to its five-year, $29.5 billion funding plan that directs $14 billion toward improving the subway system. Fire officials estimate that as many as 500 of the 800 people stuck on trains after the power outage exited the train into the tunnel on their own.

The MTA's Long Island Railroad is also having trouble.

According to the Daily News, three people were injured and hundred of commuters were evacuated on Tuesday after the incident. No need to remember your password or log in, just click.
