The South Korean president stressed the 5-year-old U.S.

His nomination of Park Sang-ki, a legal scholar, came 11 days after his earlier candidate Ahn Kyong-whan withdrew after revelations he forged an ex-girlfriend's seal on a marriage licence application when he was young.

After laying the wreath, the Seoul leader said: "Together we will achieve the dismantlement of North Korea's nuclear programme, peace on the Korean Peninsula and eventually peace in Northeast Asia".

In an interview with Reuters in April, Trump called the five-year-old US-South Korean trade pact known as KORUS "horrible" and "unacceptable" and said he would either renegotiate or terminate it. Despite commitments from both Seoul and Washington that the U.S-Korea alliance is as strong as it's ever been, both leaders' administrations are new and largely untested.

Electronics conglomerate Samsung Electronics said earlier this week it plans to spend $380 million to build a new home appliance factory in SC. But Trump's foreign policy team has emphasized increasing pressure through sanctions and has indicated North Korea must first agree to halt its nuclear program before talks can take place.

China is pushing the United States to start negotiations with the North. Trump will demand South Korea lift trade barriers to US auto sales in South Korea, as well as raise concerns over Chinese steel exports entering the U.S.by way of South Korea, during discussions with Moon. The official, however, predicted "a friendly and frank discussion about the trade relationship".

The visit will mark the first time the two leaders have met since the liberal Moon took office last month after the ouster of President Park Geun-hye, a scandal-tarred conservative who had taken a hard line against North Korea. Moon's taken heat from Trump in recent weeks over his delaying the deployment of the controversial USA -built missile defense system, Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD), which has made many regional powers unhappy, none more so than China. Pyongyang has made clear that any impending attack would lead North Korea to counter-strike.

An official from South Korea's spy agency told ABC News, on the condition of anonymity, that the reports are untrue.
