Yankees trade isn't really about Todd Frazier

The return the White Sox received from the Bronx included outfielder Blake Rutherford, the No. 3 prospect in the Yankees system, left-hander Ian Clarkin and outfielder Tito Polo. Frazier, who stood next to Derek Jeter on the field at Yankee Stadium before a 1998 game, was an All-Star with the Reds in 2014 and 2015, and hit 40 homers in his first season with the White Sox past year. The White Sox announced it was a done deal shortly after their game with the Los Angeles Dodgers ended.

Frazier brings pop to the NY lineup, though he's been plagued by stretches of struggles with the White Sox.

The New York Yankees made a pretty big move toward their 2017 season, acquiring Todd Frazier, David Robertson, and Tommy Kahnle from the Chicago White Sox.

White Sox third baseman Todd Frazier hits an RBI double during the sixth inning against the Indians on June 11, 2017 in Cleveland, Ohio.

Overall, I think it's a win for both sides, with the New York Yankees and the Chicago White Sox getting exactly what they wanted.

Blake Rutherford, the New York Yankees first pick in the 2016 Major League Baseball draft, was traded Tuesday to Chicago along with three other members of the franchise. Even if Bird does make it back successfully this season (no small feat), the Yankees could always platoon Frazier (career 122 wRC+ vs. LHP, 106 wRC+ vs. RHP) with Headley (career 112 wRC vs. RHP, 98 v. LHP) for a boost at third. Polo is a 20-year old outfielder who is have a decent season in AA, and that's as far as we're going to go on that front. The former Yankees farmhand lost in the Rule 5 Draft back in 2013 was the critical part of this deal since he is under team control for three more years and will just be entering his arbitration years.

The coup of the deal were the additions of Robertson and Kahnle. He has an earned-run average of 2.70 and has struck out 47 batters in 33.1 innings. He is batting.282 with a.342 on-base percentage, a.391 slugging percentage, two home runs and 30 RBIs in 71 games for low Class A Charleston. The Birmingham, Alabama native signed a four-year, $46MM contract prior to the 2015 season, which means he is in the third season of the pact and is still owed $17.92MM. The Yankees are looking toward the future, but if they aren't seriously competing without Rutherford by 2019 then something went wrong. Kahnle, the smallest name on his way to NY, is also in the midst of a great season, with a 2.50 ERA and 60 strikeouts in 37 games. The Chicago White Sox could have anywhere between eight and 10 of the top prospects in baseball by the end of the season.
