Offensive tackle Michael Oher, whose unlikely rise from childhood poverty to the National Football League was told in the movie "The Blind Side", was released by the Carolina Panthers after failing his team physical.

The Carolina Panthers new general manager has wasted no time getting settled into his new role.

Shortly after his release, Oher tweeted "The Brain is a scary thing". He had signed a three-year extension worth $21.6 million last summer.

"The most important thing is his health", Panthers coach Ron Rivera said, according to the team's website. "Michael's health always came first. Michael understood and we expressed that to him".

Oher had planned to report to training camp, a league source told ESPN last week, but his future with the team remained in doubt because of the concussion. Former backup right tackle Daryl Williams is likely to start opposite Kalil in 2017, with depth from rookie tackle Taylor Moton behind him. He also was a big part of Carolina's 2015 NFC Championship-winning team that ultimately fell to the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl 50.

Oher became a household name as he was the subject of the movie "The Blind Side", with actress Sandra Bullock.

Oher is due in a Nashville courtroom Friday morning at 9 a.m. for a hearing in the case.

Oher, one of the few players on social media to support former Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman after he was sacked Monday, has a Friday court date in Nashville, Tennessee, after being charged with misdemeanor assault.

Oher started the first thee games in 2016, but a concussion sustained in Week 3 caused him to miss the remainder of the season.
