Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdo?an has strongly attacked Israel and called on it to cease its actions on the Temple Mount.

Here's a look at the Israeli-Jordanian relationship.

Yatom suggested "a package deal" should be reached following discussions between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Jordan's King Abdullah.

Yatom resigned as Mossad chief in the aftermath of a failed attempt to assassinate a leader of the Islamic militant group Hamas Islamic in Jordan. The security officer, the Jordanian landlord and two Jordanian workers were present. They were captured shortly after the attack.

The Jordanian regime is already threatened by another crisis. It is not clear what effect this "diplomatic crisis" will have on those relations. One of the workers allegedly attacked an Israeli guard with a screwdriver. A deadly shooting near Israel's Embassy in Jordan has exacerbated tensions.

Jordan is the official custodian of Muslim holy sites in Jerusalem, through the Waqf organisation that administers the Haram Al-Sharif/Temple Mount complex. Israelis consider the same site their holiest, where the ancient Temple of Solomon once stood.

Jordan's ruling Hashemite dynasty, said to trace its ancestry to the Prophet Muhammad, draws much of its legitimacy from its role as protector of the shrine.

The police has sealed off the embassy. Israel has defended its policies as needed security precautions.

Tensions have been high since Israel set up new measures after Arab gunmen earlier this month opened fire from the site, killing two Israeli policemen.

Violence has since flared between Israeli security forces and Palestinians who are demanding that Israel remove the metal detectors.

According media reports, two Jordanians were killed and one Israeli seriously injured in the Sunday incident which occurred outside the Israeli embassy, located in the city's Rabiyeh neighborhood.

The Israeli guard was lightly hurt, the media reports said. Jordanian media was almost entirely focused on the story Monday, with editorials in newspapers and broadcast media also demanding the death penalty. He assured the security guard that Israel will ensure his return to Israel.

The row has complicated the foreign ministry's efforts to evacuate the embassy.

Israel and Jordan share intelligence and have overlapping interests in southern Syria and elsewhere. In response, Israel installed metal detectors at the site, a move that incensed the Muslim world. The stability of the US -allied kingdom is seen in Israel as a major security interest.

Both sides have been sparing with words.

The head of Israel's domestic Shin Bet security agency met with officials in Jordan on Monday to resolve the crisis, the worst between the two countries in recent years.
