"As long as there are rogue regimes pursuing nuclear weapons or terrorists seeking safe haven the secretary will remain on the job", Hammond told Buzzfeed News on Monday.

But the State Department on Tuesday said Tillerson does not plan to step down, quashing reports citing differences with the White House. Asked how long he was going to stay, he firmly said, "As long as the president lets me". CNN reported earlier this week that Tillerson was growing frustrated with the White House over vacancies in his department and might quit.

Pressed about Tillerson's light schedule in recent days, Nauert said the secretary was "just taking a little time off".

On Wednesday, Tillerson sought to dispel those rumors, telling reporters he has a "good" relationship with the president. "So, he's entitled to take a few days".

Tillerson has been one of Trump's closest confidants, regularly dining with the president at the White House.

Following last month's move by Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt to boycott Qatar, Tillerson publicly asked the nations to ease their blockade, and put the onus on both sides to end the crisis.

Tillerson is also reportedly upset about Trump's increasingly public feud with Attorney General Jeff Sessions, reportedly calling the president's comments about Sessions unprofessional - leading some to speculate Tillerson himself might be the next member of Trump's staff to resign. "We have a lot of work that is left to be done ahead of us".

"Tillerson may initially have had a view, then the president has his view, and obviously the president's view prevails", the official said. "He recognises that. He's deeply engaged in that work".
