One killed, six injured in Hamburg knife attack

Police said the man entered the supermarket and removed a kitchen knife, measuring around 20 cm (8 in) long, from the shelves.

Another 35-year-old man was hurt while overpowering the attacker in the street alongside other passers-by shortly after the killing. Four other men were stabbed and some of the injuries are considered severe.

A Tunisian failed asylum seeker killed 12 people by driving a truck into a Christmas market in Berlin in December, slipping through the net after intelligence officers who had monitored him reached the conclusion he was no threat.

"He ripped off the packaging and then suddenly brutally attacked the 50-year-old man who later died", police spokeswoman Kathrin Hennings said.

Federal prosecutors, who handle terrorist attacks, have not yet taken over the case, he said.

Police identified the attacker as a 26-year-old who was born in the United Arab Emirates, but they were unsure of his nationality. However, they did say in a tweet that there was only one perpetrator in the crime.

A police spokeswoman said the "Allahu Akhbar" accounts could not be confirmed.

The website of the Spiegel news magazine said the individual was named Ahmad A., who had arrived in Germany seeking asylum and had contact with the Islamist scene, as well as a history of drug use and mental health problems.

"These criminals want to poison our free society with fear, but they will not succeed", mayor Scholz said.

Germany is less than two months away from parliamentary elections on September 24 in which Chancellor Angela Merkel is likely to win a fourth term despite tensions about her decision in August 2015 to open the door to over one million migrants.

A female witness, who said she was afraid of dying, also described the attacker as running out of the shop with his hands in the air while yelling "Allahu Akbar", leaving several wounded lying in pools of their own blood.
