Three of the defendants were killed and two others wounded in a gunfight with the court's guards.

At least three people were killed and two people suffered serious injuries after a gunman opened fire inside a court house in a Moscow suburb, local health officials said on Tuesday.

Three members of a so-called "Grand Theft Auto gang" have been killed in a shootout during a bungled attempt to escape a Moscow courthouse, according to The Telegraph.

The defendants reportedly disarmed some court bailiffs at the Moscow Regional Court building on their August 1 trial date and got into a shoot-out. "Then we heard shots - approximately 25 shots were fired". She said that she saw a wounded female guard whose "face was all bloody". The body said one of the defendants tried to strangle one of the guards, and the defendants managed to escape and seized the guards' weapons.

Allegedly, the gang members were behaving without raising anyone's suspicions.

The incident happened as five suspects attacked the agents who were escorting them in a lift to a court hearing, the Interior Ministry said.

The defendants in the high-profile case are mainly citizens of Central Asian countries.

The court's spokeswoman, Natalya Osipova, told TASS news agency that the court had evacuated all staff and visitors and canceled all sessions.

Prosecutors said gang members were placing spikes on roads, forcing motorists out of their vehicles and shooting them dead.
