The clock had nearly struck midnight when the 15th seed finally closed out the third-round match with his 21st ace to seal a 6-3 6-7 (6-8) 7-6 ( 9-7) victory in a little under three hours.

Highly-rated German and fifth seed Zverev was too good for Nishikori, triumphing 6-3 6-4 in Washington on Saturday.

The match lasted 2 hours, 46 minutes, and a three-hour rain delay was thrown in, too. Sock, Zverev vs. Medvedev, and Paul vs. Nishikori.

Bhambri will be motivated to post another win in Washington, but he has to be at his best to even test Anderson, who has a better experience of playing at big stages.

In the third set it really seemed like Thiem, the number one seed of the tournament, and seventh seed in the world, would win the match.

Bhambri got broken twice in the first set as he went a set down 35 minutes into the match.

"I'd like to break back into the top 100 by the end of the year and play as many big events as possible", Bhambri said.

"I was down two breaks in the third but kept fighting and managed to play some of my better tennis".

Anderson has never shared a court with Bhambri except in workouts.

"Hopefully I can win a few more matches here", Bhambri said.

"I've practiced with him before but that was a few years ago. It's a challenge", Anderson said.

Third-seeded Milos Raonic, the 2014 Citi Open champion, won a lengthy first-set tiebreak on the way to beating Marcos Baghdatis 7-6 (7), 6-3, and eighth-seeded Jack Sock beat fellow American Jared Donaldson 7-6 (6), 6-2.
