A manhunt is underway after a Clinton, Mo., police officer was shot and killed during a traffic stop late Sunday.

However, authorities aren't giving up hope of catching Officer Michael's alleged killer. Michael returned fire, but the suspect managed to get back into the vehicle and drive away.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says they are looking for Ian McCarthy, 39, of Clinton, in connection to the shooting.

'We know as police officers that those traffic stops are always unsafe because we don't know the individual that is driving. He was a Clinton resident and had been with the department for less than a year. Sergeant Martin said that witness subsequently confirmed that the person who entered the vehicle and drove off was Mr. McCarthy. McCarthy fled the scene in the auto and crashed about three blocks later.

Lowe said Monday that the vehicle Michael stopped is registered to McCarthy. "(Michael) was heroic right to the end. The slain officer had served with the Clinton Police Department for less than a year and is survived by his wife and several step sons.

The snake was disposed of and the woman was taken to a local hospital where she was treated for non-life threatening injuries. When first responders arrived at the scene they found the woman lying on her driveway with the snake wrapper around her body.

A "routine traffic stop" is a misnomer, Lowe said. It was not clear if the driver was shot or injured in the crash.

The Clinton Police Department has no body camera policy, but police were working Monday morning to determine if there was dashcam video from Michael's auto or surveillance video from nearby businesses, Lowe said.

No other details have been released at this time.
