Hurricane Harvey Has Affected More Than 1 Million Public School Students

Houston Independent School District Superintendent Richard Carranza is hopeful the district can start school September 11. HISD is one of 17 districts in the greater Houston area.

Superintendent Carranza has dispatched boats to each of Houston's 280 public schools to check for damage.

Most urban and rural schools are keeping pace in their efforts to recruit and retain more teachers to meet a court-mandated target for reduced class sizes, Education Minister Rob Fleming says. Carranza told ABC13 Liberty High School had significant damage, and that classes will likely have to take place in another facility.

"We have a process to wrap our arms around them, to support them for a social service-type agency perspective", Rock Hill District Director of Communications Mychal Frost said. The Houston Independent School District on Wednesday announced that it got the green light from the USDA and the Texas Department of Agriculture to essentially allow all students to participate in the National School Lunch and Breakfast programs.

The idea came from Arlington Elementary principal Melisa Viers, whose daughter is an administrator in the Houston school district.

"Our position is that school schedules should be a matter of local control as those closest to the communities are best equipped to make decisions that meet their schools' unique needs", said spokesman Troy Flint.

Some schools may not be accessible, leaving 10,000-12,000 students to relocate to other campuses. While all students are eligible, parents are still asked to register through this website so enough food and funding can be secured.

Oklahoma's schools are starting another school year with more than 500 teaching vacancies despite record numbers of emergency certified teachers and the elimination of more than 400 teaching positions since last school year, according to a new survey from the Oklahoma State School Boards Association. One operator said they have seen higher rates of absenteeism when neighboring districts are off and they are in session.

That may mean school buses picking up kids from shelters.
