North Korea says hydrogen bomb test was 'perfect success'

South Korea said it will seek the most powerful United Nations sanctions to "completely" isolate North Korea.

An natural disaster registering 6.3 was detected in the secretive state just before 7am BST on Sunday 75km (45 miles) north-northwest of Kimchaek, where previous tests have been carried out.

The Japanese government concluded that the tremor was a nuclear explosion based on seismological data, the foreign minister said in a live television broadcast. That would be 3:30 Seoul and Tokyo, and 2:30 a.m. EDT.

The announcement was made three hours after the test.

North Korea announced Sunday it successfully tested a hydrogen nuclear bomb that can be loaded onto a new intercontinental ballistic missile. However, the said picture couldn't be verified independently and no journalists were present when the photo was taken.

North Korea appears to have all the components for a viable nuclear deterrent against the USA and its allies, specifically an arsenal of theater missiles and an ICBM that can range the US, a nuclear warhead, and a reliable re-entry vehicle capable of surviving an intercontinental trajectory.

An allegedly artificial quake was detected at 12:36pm in North Hamgyeong Province, according to the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA), Yonhap reports.

North Korea has conducted five nuclear missile tests since 2006, including two previous year. That was revised up from an initial report of 5.6.

The second quake measured 4.6. The U.S. Geological Survey called the quake an explosion with a magnitude 6.3.

China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement, "The Democratic People's Republic of Korea has once again conducted a nuclear test in spite of widespread opposition from the global community".

United States has been sending mixed signals to Kim jong-un with President Donald Trump saying that "talking is not the answer" when it comes to reining in North Korea-contradicting his top Cabinet officials who insist the Washington will continue to seek diplomatic resolution of Pyongyang nuclear and ballistic missile program.

South Korea's Yonhap News Agency, citing Chinese officials, said a second natural disaster with a magnitude of 4.6 was detected near the nuclear test site, raising concern of a possible tunnel collapse.

The same news outlet published images earlier Sunday showing leader Kim Jong-un inspecting a new H-bomb warhead.

The US and its allies attempt to detect blast material to gauge North Korea's progress, but Pyongyang has become better at containing it as its nuclear programme has evolved.

It is the rogue nation's sixth, and most powerful, nuclear test.

"It follows two such tests last year and more than a dozen missile tests this year".

The report came just hours after North Korea claimed that its leader has inspected the loading of a hydrogen bomb into a new intercontinental ballistic missile.
