Channel 4 is today celebrating its biggest overnight performance in five years as it launched the new series of the Great British Bake Off.

The series returned to television screens on Tuesday night with three new faces in its line-up: presenters Sandi Toksvig and Noel Fielding, as well as new judge Prue Leith.

"The Great British Bake Off's audience last night proves it's still one of the country's favourite shows", Jay said.

Viewers took to Twitter throughout the episode on Tuesday night, sharing their thoughts on the series.

C4 nabbed rights to the ratings smasher past year after the BBC lost the contract to air it following disagreements over price with Love Productions, the United Kingdom firm behind the baking format.

Four million Time Warner Cable records exposed in leak
Kromtech added that most of the exposed data appeared to be related to Time Warner Cable, Bright House Networks and AMC Network. There were also some internal company records like credentials for external systems, internal emails, and SQL database dumps.

The BBC moved the show to flagship channel BBC One in 2014 with Season 5, and saw viewing figures for the opening episode jump from 5.6 million from the previous to 7.2 million.

Channel 4's highest ever audience is 13.8 million, for the drama series A Woman of Substance in 1985, while Big Brother brought in nearly 10 million viewers at the peak of its popularity at the start of the millennium.

The figures don't include those who watch the show on the network's catch-up service All 4.

Unlike the BBC, Channel 4 is funded via commercials, and has signed Bake Off sponsorship deals worth $5.2 million, while also extending the show to 75 to fit in more than 15 minutes of breaks.

Kasabian guitarist Serge Pizzorno has revealed that he was the one to persuade Noel Fielding to take the presenting job on the revamped Great British Bake Off.

The Great British Bake Off is back, but not as we know it.
