Dustin Pedroia Insists Sign Stealing 'Part Of The Game'

Spying itself is not considered a violation of Major League Baseball rules, but Rob Manfred has to know there's no reversing the trend toward high-def cameras and digital messaging as the teams keep looking for ways to get the upper hand.

The New York Times broke a bombshell yesterday, an hour before Manfred was set to address the media in Boston. He felt the sign stealing was a product of the rivalry between the Yankees and Red Sox, but MLB's investigation into the matter said Boston used it against other teams as well.

In baseball, the catcher, crouched behind the batter, will signal to the pitcher what kind of ball should be thrown, such as a fast ball or slider.

Let's take a look at a few more notes from the Red Sox's 6-1 win over the Toronto Blue Jays.

The most famous example sign stealing was a secret for nearly a half-century.

While sign-stealing in baseball is not against the rules, it is frowned upon, and the use of electronics or any equipment other than the eyes is not allowed.

Yet the dugout bullpen devices do not have Internet connectivity or the ability to stream live video - to prevent the sort of activities for which Major League Baseball is investigating the Red Sox. The newspaper said one clip showed Pedroia passing along the intelligence to Boston outfielder Chris Young, who formerly played for the Yankees. "I will guarantee you that is totally fraudulent what the Red Sox are actually claiming".

In fact, the Red Sox even admitted to league investigators that they used electronics with the objective of shortening the communications chain.

Manfred's tonality was that of a man that didn't want to play mediator. "They are going to do their best to cross you up and make it hurt".

"I don't think it will have an impact", Sabathia said.

French fashion giants LVMH and Kering ban ultra-thin models
In the future, agencies will be forced to use female models starting at French size 34, which equates to a US size 2. All their fashion brands have committed to banning models below French size 34 for women and 44 for men.

Minutes before Manfred took the podium, a bemused Dombrowski fielded questions atop it. It's part of the game.

"So I mean, it's baseball, man", Pedroia said.

Whether you are amused or left aghast by these revelations depends on your allegiances and the degree of your baseball piety. But no I never thought it was wrong. "I feel bad for the guys that were out there for the entire game".

Just as they had done in each of the first two games of the series, the Jays scored first as Fister walked two straight batters with two out and second and third, walking Miguel Montero with the bases loaded. "It's an edge we can gain".

"The last week, he's gotten on the mound three times and has maintained the stuff", manager John Farrell said, via the Boston Herald's Jason Mastrodonato. "Now, I'm not saying that everyone is doing it. But you know, whatever". Has it ever happened with this type of allegation? "I do know that". He did, however, indicate that taking away wins was unlikely because it is hard to determine "to what extent this impacted the outcome of any particular game".

"The Yankees decide they want to give it today, for whatever reason".

"[MLB] had a good picture of me, Brock, and CY hanging out though", Pedroia said.

So if this is an issue that's often glossed over, or handled within the general manager community, why is this a league office issue now? But with technology these days, what the teams do is that they have folks that are studying the replay and looking at it real-time, trying to figure out what those signs are and trying to break them and then trying to relay them down so the runner on second base can try and pick them up and get that to the batter. "I'm not really sure why".

Red Sox first baseman Mitch Moreland was 31 years old when his RBI grounder tied it at 2 — he turned 32 when his birthday came at midnight, and celebrated with a win. The next time the two meet, whether it's in the playoffs or 2018, it'll be the hottest the feud has been since 2004.
