Anderson found himself ranked at world No. 80 at the start of the year, following an injury hit 2016, but has fought his way into a first Grand Slam final admirably to return to the top-20 at the end of the final major of the year.

The Spaniard struggled to handle Del Potro's serve and huge forehand in the opening set before finding his stride to set up a title-decider with South Africa's Kevin Anderson on Sunday.

The lanky Anderson dropped the first set against 12th seed Pablo Carreno Busta before rolling over the top of the Spaniard to win in four, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4.

"More importantly, I have given myself a shot at being in the finals and I will be playing for a grand slam trophy".

Aiming to become the first South African man to reach the US Open final since Cliff Drysdale achieved the feat in 1965, during the amateur era, Anderson credited his progress to minor improvements in his game.

Kevin Anderson has evened the U.S. Open men's semifinals, becoming the first player to take a set off Pablo Carreno Busta in the tournament. A bullet-like backhand victor sealed the second set for the South African, leveling the match at one set all. He took the set when the Spaniard double-faulted at 5-6, 30-all and Anderson then smacked a forehand victor into the corner on set point.

Staffer told police that Joe Paterno noted 'second complaint' against Jerry Sandusky
That McQueary's statement to police didn't surface in Sandusky's trial, however, was no mistake. Paterno was sacked by the Penn State board of trustees in a special meeting later that night.

Anderson then to served his way in the fourth set make his way into the final. Instead, the South African hung tough and emerged a 7-6 6-7 6-3 7-6 victor to make his maiden Slam semifinal. It was an unbelievably tough match, I was pretty nervous starting out.

"Here I am just nine months after thinking I might have to undergo a year's worth of recovery for surgery".

"I need to be very focused with my serve and play aggressive", Nadal said, "because if you let him play from good positions with his forehand, you are dead". But he ruled the match from there, losing his serve only once more while breaking Carreno Busta four times out of a bounty of 14 break points.

Kevin Anderson next faces either world number one Rafael Nadal in the first ever Grand Slam final of his career. I mean, I lost in the semifinals.

"He was playing with confidence, was very good, and he was more aggressive than me". Del Potro was the U.S. Open champion in 2009, when he beat Nadal in the semifinals and Roger Federer in the final. I think that I have to take a lot of positive things from this tournament, because I won a lot of matches. Across the first five rounds, he has dropped just two sets and played dominant tennis everytime he stepped on the court.

With another inspiring march picking up steam with a fourth round win over sixth seed Dominic Thiem and a quarter-final upset of Federer, Nadal derailed the Del Potro train turning his dream into a nightmare.
