Putin Warns: Don't Push North Korea Into 'Dead End'

The announcement follows North Korea's detonation on Sunday of its largest ever nuclear bomb, which it claims to have been a long-feared hydrogen bomb capable of being placed on a long-range intercontinental ballistic missile. "Have ever you thought about it?"

The leaders, meeting in Vladivostok, Russia, also agreed on coordinating bilaterally and with the United States, their mutual security ally, to call on China and Russia in dealing with threats from North Korea, according to a Japanese official who was at the talks.

During the third Eastern Economic Forum this week in Vladivostok, South Korean President Moon Jae-in, in his keynote speech, proposed expanding economic cooperation between South Korea and Russian Federation.

Japan's Foreign Ministry said that Abe strongly encouraged Russian Federation to respond constructively as a permanent member of the Security Council.

"They know it and they see nuclear weapons and weapons of mass destruction as the only way for them to protect themselves", Putin said Thursday.

Like China, Russia has opposed the deployment of the US' Terminal High Altitude Area Defense anti-missile system in South Korea and wants to maintain the status quo on the peninsula.

In a veiled dig at Trump, Putin said military hysteria is "provoking the situation" and will spark a reaction from North Korea. Putin's government recently invited the State Department's special representative for North Korea policy, Ambassador Joe Yun, to come to Russian Federation for discussions in early September about potential dialogue with North Korea.

The talks on the sidelines of an economic forum came as the U.N. Security Council, including veto-wielding permanent members China and Russian Federation, is debating a fresh resolution to impose tougher sanctions such as an oil embargo on North Korea to curb its nuclear and missile development programs. According to Japan, this experiment was 160 kilogram tons stronger - ten times stronger than the USA bomb thrown at Hiroshima in 1945.

Privately, Russia has been making a play to insert itself into the back-channel diplomacy, three officials said.

U.S. President Donald Trump has said that "now is not the time to talk to North Korea" and that "all options remain open to defend the United States and its allies".

"We believe that sanctions as pressure are only half of the key to resolving the nuclear issue".

Russia's principal proposal, which would trade a freeze in North Korea's nuclear and missile activities in exchange for the United States and South Korea paring down military exercises, is a non-starter for both Washington and Seoul.

Pyongyang conducted its sixth and what many believe to be its most powerful nuclear test so far Sunday.

Most analysts and policymakers agree cutting off supplies of oil to North Korea would hurt its economy. The North also threatened to launch a salvo of Hwasong-12 intermediate range missiles toward the U.S. Pacific island territory of Guam, the home of military facilities the North claims are meant to target it.

Analysts said the two are also concerned the system's advanced radar could be used to look inside their own countries or potentially even limit their deterrent capabilities.
