Why Rafa Benitez isn't at Newcastle United's game against Swansea

Swansea City manager Paul Clement admits that his side were nowhere near good enough during their 1-0 home defeat at the hands of Newcastle United.

Renato Sanches was the headline act in that respect yet the 20-year-old's debut proved to be something of an anti-climax.

Both sides started the new season slowly.

Not that this defeat should be pinned on him for one moment.

"We brought the numbers down and it's far more manageable".

Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar all make the list but it is Manchester United who dominate with four players in the top 10, three in the top five and nine in the top 30.

For Benítez, the outcome was just what the doctor ordered.

"After the game Rafa rang and he has congratulated everybody, especially the players because they have done a massive job".

Newcastle secured their first win of the season before the global break by beating West Ham 3-0, but boss Rafael Benitez is likely to be disappointed that he was not able to add to his squad before the close of the transfer window. Swansea's head coach sounded baffled, frustrated and annoyed by the way his team had played.

"I'm finding it hard to understand why I saw what I saw".

"We made too many mistakes, we gave the ball away too often". We are taking everything as it comes at the moment, getting the training right and make sure we are at it again. Our shape didn't cause them enough problems.

Clement added: "Tammy's got around the goalkeeper at 0-0 and on another day we might have got something out of that".

A clubs statement, released on social media said: "We can confirm that Rafa Benítez will not be at the Liberty Stadium today as he recovers from an operation. I would go for this squad now - 100 per cent".

Newcastle travelled to Swansea in October 2014 after a awful start to the season.

"With Matt Ritchie's delivery, it is on a plate every time. He was there watching and hopefully he is back soon and can join us", said Lascelles. "I'm very disappointed with the way that we played", said Clement.
