Mercedes-AMG Project One revealed: the ultimate hypercar?

"The Mercedes-AMG Project ONE is the hottest and coolest auto we have ever designed".

We'll leave you with the leaked photos and the YouTube live reveal link, since Mercedes-Benz will probably deliver a lot more info in around half an hour. We thought this was nothing more than a form of speech used to create hype but we were wrong.

It's a mid-engined vehicle, its 1.6-litre V6 petrol engine with electrically-assisted turbocharging placed just in front of the rear axle. The vehicle is mid-engined (ahead of the rear axle) and it can easily reach speeds of 11,000 rpm, which is now unique for a roadgoing vehicle. The electric motors also allow the Project One to achieve a claimed 25km pure electric range. On a road long enough, AMG suggests a V-max beyond 350km/h. Though the exterior design will be cleaner than the visually awkward, albeit incredibly windswept F1 cars of today, it will have gone through similarly efforts to reduce drag. The large rear spoiler extends in two stages to improve aero efficiency and stability as the air speed increases, while a cluster of smaller fins above each front wheel also control air flow according to road speed. These drive the auto through an eight-speed gearbox, complete with manual and automatic modes. Turbocharged V6 engines may have muted the F1 field on race day, but it seems safe to predict the Project One won't exactly be subtle-sounding. The steering wheel, as with Formula One, is where a driver controls numerous vehicle's key performance functions.

Mercedes describes the cabin as 'Formula 1 for two.' Deep bucket seats with adjustable backrests are present, while the square steering wheel is noticeably Formula 1 inspired. A digital screen linked to a rear-facing camera replaces the rear-view mirror and Mercedes has also seen fit to include a smartphone holder and sat nav.

It seems like Mercedes-AMG is really going full power in the performance auto segment.

Born from F1's current engine regulations, the auto is also incredibly efficient, with Mercedes boasting a thermal efficiency figure of over 40 percent - an unprecedented number for any internal combustion engine on the road.

And while the Project One may draw from Formula One, the overall look is more like that of a Le Mans prototype.

It will go into limited production of just 275 units each costing $2.54 million. We're advised that nine are headed for Australia and one for New Zealand.
