As residents awaken to assess the damage left by Hurricane Irma, the weakening storm continues northwest with winds of 65 miles per hour.

Shortly after Irma ravaged the Caribbean, strong Jose formed, threatening already wrecked houses, businesses and shelters with major loss of communication. The storm gradually lost strength, weakening to a Category 1 hurricane by Monday morning.

Jose has maximum sustained winds of 75 miles per hour and is moving east at 6 miles per hour, according to the advisory. That's more than 65 percent of all electricity customers. "First thing I saw were the trees down", said Jesse Hinson, who arrived to check on his house and was amazed by his luck.

US President Donald Trump, Vice President Mike Pence and their cabinet were briefed on Hurricanes Irma and Jose, with Trump warning on Twitter that "this is a storm of enormous destructive power".

The most severe storm surge in Jacksonville hit the downtown, Riverside, San Marco and other neighborhoods as high tides filled in the St. Johns River, well after the storm passed through Florida.

Hurricane Irma, despite having weakened past its transit over Cuba, still has enough power to slam Florida's Gulf Coast with sheets of rain and surging winds.

His town might have taken the worst of the wind, but the devastating storm surge they all feared never materialized. Irma is now over Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Alabama and Tennessee.

It is still too early to determine Jose's exact path - Irma's path wasn't completely known until she made landfall in Florida.

"The greatest impacts from Irma will be felt with winds increasing to 40 to 50 miles per hour with gusts near 70 miles per hour along and east of the center of the storm track by early this afternoon".
