In a statement a hospital spokesman, Mike Barwell, said, "Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon is now locked down following reports of an active shooter in the hospital".

The city of Lebanon wrote on its website that someone was taken into police custody before 3 p.m. Tuesday after reports of an active shooter at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.

According to a tweet from hospital officials at Dartmouth-Hitchcock, police are now on site. Traffic in the area has been stopped on routes leading to the Hospital, Associated Press reported.

The hospital, the state's largest, was locked down following reports of an active shooter, a spokesman said in an emailed message.

Additional information was not immediately available.

The New Hampshire Attorney General's office said they were investigating. Witnesses said via Twitter they had heard gunshots in the hospital's intensive care unit (ICU) ward.
