Washington state high school student killed after he tried to stop gunman

The shooting took place at Freeman High School outside Spokane.

Classmates told the paper Sharpe was obsessed with previous school shootings and had brought notes at the beginning of the school year, saying he was going to do "something stupid" and might get killed or jailed. Some students alerted counselors, but it wasn't clear what school officials did in response.

The sheriff's office said their hearts are with the community during this tragedy and thanked them for their kind words, patience, and understanding throughout the horrific incident.

"They practice evacuation, locking down and staying in their room in the event of a violent intruder in their school", said Mark Sterk, Spokane Public Schools' director of campus safety.

Some media reports include the identities of the students, but they have not been released by law enforcement at last report.

The day before the school shooting outside Spokane, the rural school district conducted a routine lockdown drill.

The injured students remain hospitalized, while the teenage suspect is due to appear in court tomorrow.

"I kind of came to, and the hallway was empty except for the girl next to me", said Elisa, who described the hallway as very dusty because the ceiling had been shot.

An "active shooter" was arrested last Friday at a school in Columbus, Ohio, although no one was injured in that incident.

"It's frightening, I think that's a point anyone can understand", Moore said.

He was replying to questions from presspersons on whether the government plans to stall the daily price revision in view of the spike in rates.

Harper said the shooter had many friends and was not bullied, calling him "nice and amusing and weird" and a huge fan of the TV show "Breaking Bad".

Annie Baxter, whose two daughters attend Freeman Middle School across the street from the high school, told The Spokesman-Review that children were running into buildings when she pulled up to the school area about 10:15 a.m.

After the shooting, a two-lane road into the community of about 500 people near the Idaho border was clogged with vehicles.

A call to the school was not immediately returned.

"I was putting my backpack away and I heard a loud pop, and I turned around".

"He called me and said, 'Mom, there are gunshots.' He sounded so scared". He told officers he wanted to teach "everyone a lesson about what happens when you bully others".

She says classes were about to begin because it's a "late start" day. However, the TV station said it had not been able to confirm that with the school.

Washington Gov. Jay Inslee issued a statement shortly after the shooting.

According to the Associated Press, that school employee was a custodian.
