As additional patients were found in distress, police and doctors from Memorial Hospital finally chose to evacuate the entire nursing home at about 6am, according to accounts from Katz and Hollywood Police Chief Tomas Sanchez.

Sanchez said police would be checking the approximately 42 assisted living facilities throughout the city for any other patients in distress.

The causes of their death were not immediately clear, but the facility, Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills, completed a precautionary evacuation of all its patients.

Florida Power & Light said it had provided power to some parts of the Hollywood nursing home but that the facility was not on a county top tier list for emergency power restoration.

The overall death toll from Irma climbed to 81 on Wednesday, with several hard-hit Caribbean islands accounting for more than half the fatalities, and officials continued to assess damage inflicted by the second major hurricane to strike the us mainland this year.

"In the days prior to the storm and through today, we have been in regular communication with our facilities to help coordinate needs and ensure proper implementation of the emergency management plans each facility is required to have", the statement from the association said.

At least eight nursing home residents have died in Hollywood, Florida, according to city officials.

Firefighters evacuated 115 people from the nursing home.

The firefighters quickly attended the scene and the fire was extinguished after an hour. Police later updated the death toll to 22 students and two teachers.

Not counting the nursing home deaths, at least 13 people in Florida have died in Irma-related circumstances, many of them well after the storm had passed. "Although the details of these reported deaths are still under investigation, this situation is unfathomable", Scott said. A deputy at the checkpoint said they were trying to keep people safe. He also said that if the nursing facility was found to be at fault, it would face the full extent of the law. The staff used fans, put cold towels and ice on the patients, and gave them cold drinks.

Irma killed at least 31 people in Florida, plus seven more in Georgia and SC combined, authorities said.

In a statement, Jorge Carballo, the nursing home's administrator, said the facility and its staff "diligently prepared for the impact of Hurricane Irma" and were cooperating fully with authorities.

A kitchen worker at the center told the Miami Herald that the facility "had power from a generator to cook meals, but no air conditioning". Sanchez did not answer questions regarding whether a generator was running inside the facility.

They do not, however, represent the Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills. Some homes and businesses could be without power for weeks, especially in the hardest-hit areas like southwest Florida, the NextEra Energy Inc unit said. Randy Katz, the medical director of Memorial Regional's emergency department, said at a press conference.

In Green Cove Springs, on the St. John's River just south of Jacksonville, many families need a canoe to get to their front doors. In addition, the nursing home is situated in the same location as well. Another resident died later in hospital, officials said.

An estimated 150 facilities out of the almost 700 in the state are now without full power services, the association said. Floridians are suffering without power and heat is also become troublesome for people in the state which is known for the sweltering temperatures.
