FORT MYERS, Fla- President Trump is expected to visit SWFL on Thursday to meet with Hurricane Irma victims.

"The president is going to go down as soon as he can tomorrow to make sure that he thanks the people that have been working so tirelessly to help others in this storm", Bossert said on Fox News Wednesday morning.

"The job that everybody done is incredible", Trump said.

After ripping through Caribbean islands with Category 5 winds, killing at least 37 people, it weakened slightly as it took direct aim at Florida, whose explosive real estate development in recent decades has made it the nation's third-most-populous state.

"I hope this man right here, Rick Scott, runs for the Senate", Trump said. In Texas, Hurricane Harvey had left the Houston area deluged by rising flood waters. "That was just wiped out", Trump said. But referring to those who did perish in the storm as "such a small number" is more than a little callous, and probably something you would have never heard any of his predecessors say, considering they knew how to speak. "Otherwise we're not doing any deal".

The president, wearing a white baseball cap with "USA" written on it, later visited Naples, near where Irma first reached the United States mainland on Sunday, handed out sandwiches to resident at a feeding station under a blue shade pavilion.

But as Trump's comments about Scott suggested, politics wasn't far from the surface in Florida, the largest and most pivotal state in recent presidential elections.
