"Though Stanton's most recent appearance was in the hit TV series "#twin peaks", he will appear in one more project: "the film "Frank and Ava", in which Stanton plays the role of Sheriff Lloyd. His credits also include "Repo Man", "Cool Hand Luke", "Paris, Texas", "Alien", "Wild at Heart" and "Twin Peaks".

After decades in the trenches of the industry, Stanton emerged from obscurity as a testament to how the hard work and resilience of an artist could mold something versatile and spellbinding in front of a camera. "Loads of love to you wherever you are now!".

Stanton was one of the rare true character performers who became recognizable enough to be a star in his own right.

Paris, Texas , Wim Wenders' 1984 road film, was Stanton's breakthrough, not to mention his first-ever role as a leading man, and at the age of 58, no less.

"The great Harry Dean Stanton has left us", Lynch said Friday. He came from a musical family and said that he was at one point faced with the decision of pursuing a career as a singer or an actor.

Early on in his career, Stanton was often picked up to play intimidating crooks or ill-tempered sidekicks on television shows like Bat Masterson, Johnny Ringo, The Adventures of Rin Tin Tin, The Rifleman, The Untouchables, and U.S. Marshal.

Prior to becoming an actor, Stanton served in the Navy during World War II. "After all these years, I finally got the part I wanted to play", THR quotes Stanton as saying of that film.

Hamill posted a black and white photograph of Stanton on Twitter, writing alongside it: "Sad to say goodbye to the incomparable Harry Dean Stanton - so profoundly authentic in every role he inhabited".

He never married but enjoyed a long relationship with actress Rebecca De Mornay, who was 35 years his junior.

In the 2012 documentary Partly Fiction, Stanton answered some deep questions from his friend and colleague, director David Lynch.
