A firearms team from Avon and Somerset police was involved in the shooting, which was near junction 19 of the M5.

While BBC Radio Bristol reported that police fired at a auto a number of times, quoting eye-witnesses, the police have neither confirmed nor denied it.

The Avon and Somerset force has referred the shooting to the Independent Police Complaints Commission but confirmed it was not terror-related.

According to Bristol Post reporter Heather Pickstock, who is on the scene, a man was chased off the motorway by police before being shot through the window of his vehicle.

The image below, adapted from footage broadcast by Sky News, shows six bullet holes in the vehicle, a red Suzuki Swift.

He said: 'As I came out of Portishead to join the motorway I got stopped and ahead of me were police in the road. They maybe shot with handguns five, six, maybe 10 times.
