"It has been many, many years in this city since we've lost a child in a school in this kind of violent incident, and it is all the more troubling for that reason", New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said in a WABC-TV report.

McCree was pronounced dead upon arrival at St. Barnabas Hospital, and LaBoy remains in critical condition. He excused himself to go to the bathroom, and when he came back, he pulled out a switchblade and started fighting and slashing at them, police said. In 2014, a fight between two 14-year-old boys ended with one stabbed to death outside a Bronx school.

Police say the 18-year-old was taken into custody, but it's not yet clear what prompted the attack.

Some studies have found that black and Hispanic students in charter schools are more likely to attend predominantly nonwhite schools than their peers in traditional schools, partly because charter schools tend to be located in urban areas and are often established specifically to serve low-income students of color.

According to the New York Times, the attack occurred in a building that houses two schools, the elementary school P.S. 67 and the Urban Assembly School for Wildlife Conservation.

Cedeno was charged Thursday with murder and weapon possession.

Authorities said Cedeno allegedly used a switchblade to stab two of his classmates.

The incident was said to have taken place in a building at 2024 Mohegan Avenue in the East Tremont section of the Bronx, New York City, at around 10:45 a.m EDT. He walked into the hallway after the attack and encountered a guidance counselor, who asked him to hand over the knife.

Sammarco said on Wednesday that the post-mortem examination found no obvious signs of torture. However, the coroner's report said Warmbier's teeth were "natural and in good fix ".

"And less than half of students polled at the school a year ago - 47 percent - said they felt safe on campus, well below the city average", the report says. Another student was seriously injured.

The other, Laboy's close friend, 15-year-old Matthew McCree, who police said was killed after also being stabbed in the chest.

Police said Cedeno had not gone to school officials before with any complaints of harassment.

"I have been a staunch opponent of age-inappropriate co-locations throughout my tenure as borough president", said Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz in a statement.

The school does not have metal detectors although police recorded 11 public safety episodes at the school in the first half of the year.

Chief Joanne Jaffe, head of NYPD's community affairs, said about 75 schools around the district are equipped with metal detectors, and they would do random sweeps of all schools for the time being.

"I tried to called the school".
